Breakdance Club at UCDavis Design Process

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Breakdancing fascinates me. Tried it when I was a freshmen and through it  I've met TONS of great friends and had loads of fun. This collabo was a great opportunity to view breakdance through my eyes.

A few guidelines:
-Design revolve around "BDC" - breakdance club at  UC Davis.
-Maroon background.
-Must include "level 99 breakloads."

Here we go:

↑ I tried to recreate the dynamic moments while spelling out "BDC" with a few classic breakdancing moves.

Like this:

↑Problem with this design is that it's too plain.

So I added a few more elements - making the design into a graffiti piece.

Now it seems too crowded and too distracting.

Idea 1's off the board.

Move onto the 2nd idea:

↑From a different perspective, instead of the words - I chose to emphasize the design on the character.

In his bboy stance - boom box - track jackets.

With a tint of BDC in the background to keep it from distracting the overall image.

After finishing up the 2nd idea. I had a third - graffiti.

↑There's always been an association between breakdancing and graffiti, which both fall under "hiphop." I used to do graffiti back in high school. It's what got me started with this whole t-shirt stuff, so I thought I gave it a try.

Sure been awhile:

↑I wanted to make it legible yet maintain its authentic essence (where people can't really tell what the letters are). Graffiti's interesting - because majority of the time, people have no clue what you're writing about, yet you get lots of praises. It's an art form between graphic design and typography - feel free to throw kerning out the window.

Digitizing it was also pretty fun:

↑The final design's made out of 4 separate layers.

BAM:

'til next time,
